A Reminiscence of Cricket

A Reminiscence of Cricket (also known as W.G. Grace: A Memory) is Arthur Conan Doyle’s heartfelt tribute to the legendary Victorian cricketer Dr. W.G. Grace. In this charming essay, Doyle recalls a special cricket match in which he had the honor of playing with Grace – arguably the greatest batsman of the 19th century. Doyle, an avid cricketer himself, paints the scene vividly: a sunny afternoon at Lord’s, the excitement in the pavilion, and the towering figure of Grace at the crease, beard flowing as he takes guard. The reminiscence is filled with Doyle’s awe at Grace’s skills – his imperious batting strokes, strategic genius, and sportsman’s charisma. One anecdote Doyle fondly relates is how Grace once nonchalantly hit a ball Doyle bowled for a massive six, then offered kind encouragement to the bowler (Doyle!) afterwards. The piece isn’t merely a fan’s eulogy; it places Grace in the context of England’s golden age of amateur cricket, highlighting his role in transforming the sport and the gentlemanly conduct he exemplified. Doyle’s tone is nostalgic and reverent, yet warm – bringing out Grace’s human side (his humor, competitiveness, and magnanimity in victory). For Doyle, this memory is not just about runs scored but about the spirit of the game and an era. A Reminiscence of Cricket thus serves as a valuable period piece, where one literary giant salutes a sporting giant, preserving the crack of leather on willow and the camaraderie of cricket for posterity in elegant prose.
